~ Spokane has taken a leadership role in the new drug laws recently passed by the state Legislature. Mayor Nadine Woodward issued a statement regarding the legislation, which updates the state drug possession and use laws.

Woodward said that the legislation is a step back towards tougher boundaries and prioritizing public health and safety. She also asked other mayors around the state to join her in pushing for a common-sense solution that balances accountability to community safety and compassion for individuals struggling with addiction.

The legislation criminalizes possession and use while maintaining local charging control and discretion to leave every opportunity for treatment options before and after conviction. Woodward noted that everyone got something from this compromise, but no one got everything. She also highlighted Spokane's strong leadership role in setting an example for other cities. The local ordinance adopted by the City Council looks similar to what was passed by the state Legislature.
