SPOKANE, WA, May 8, 2025 ~ Early this morning, a house fire broke out in the 3900 block of South Havana Street, prompting a swift response from Spokane firefighters and Spokane County Fire District 8. The incident was reported at 2:45 a.m. through multiple 911 calls, with dispatchers from Spokane Regional Emergency Communications informing crews that an adult male was believed to still be inside the burning home.

Upon arrival, Truck 14 from the Lincoln Heights neighborhood and Engine 11 from the Comstock neighborhood immediately initiated a coordinated fire attack. While Engine 11 focused on extinguishing the flames, Truck 14 began searching inside for the missing occupant.

Despite facing intense heat and thick black smoke throughout the home, firefighters were able to locate an unconscious adult male in the front room. They quickly removed him through a window and treated him for smoke inhalation at the scene before transporting him to Sacred Heart Medical Center in critical condition. Tragically, a dog was also found inside the home and despite efforts to revive it, it succumbed to smoke inhalation.

The fire was brought under control within just 20 minutes, but not before causing extensive damage to the home. Investigators are still working to determine the exact cause of the fire, but believe it originated in a breezeway between the garage and house before spreading rapidly into other areas of the home.

Fortunately, one occupant was able to escape safely through an egress window in their basement bedroom. This serves as a reminder of the importance of having a practiced home fire escape plan, functioning smoke alarms on every level of your home, and keeping egress windows accessible – especially in basement bedrooms.

The successful rescue of one life under such dangerous conditions is credited to the fast and coordinated response from both Spokane firefighters and Spokane County Fire District 8. This incident highlights their dedication and bravery in protecting their community.

Photos taken at the scene show extensive damage to the home as well as the heroic efforts of the firefighters. The cause of the fire is still under investigation and updates will be provided as they become available.
