As a precautionary measure, the structure was ventilated and specialized monitoring equipment was used to ensure safe atmospheric conditions for a specialized repair contractor to perform their work. Crews remained on-site with the contractor to ensure their safety and that mitigation efforts were successful.
The contractor was able to safely control the situation and contain the ammonia hazard by 6:30 a.m. on Saturday morning. As a result, Riverfront Park and surrounding streets have been fully reopened to the public and normal operations have resumed.
Ammonia is commonly used in refrigeration processes for ice rinks, such as the one at Riverfront Park which operates from November to February. The cause of the leak is currently under investigation by authorities.
For any further information or concerns regarding this incident, please contact Spokane Fire Department at 311 or 509-755-2489.
