~ On Sunday morning, November 11, 2023, the Spokane Fire Department (SFD) responded to a house fire in the 500 block of East Bridgeport Avenue. Upon arrival, firefighters reported moderate smoke emanating from the rear of the residence and immediately began a search operation and initiated an aggressive attack on the fire.
The SFD was able to evacuate all occupants without harm, including two adults, four dogs, and two cats. An adult male occupant was identified as suffering severe smoke inhalation and was treated by SFD Paramedics and transported by AMR to the hospital. The fire was extinguished in under five minutes with damages confined to the main floor's back room. The cause of the fire was identified as combustible materials placed too close to a space heater.

The quick response and professionalism of the SFD averted a more significant tragedy, illustrating again the effectiveness and readiness of our people and the system of protection we have in Spokane. The property saved is an estimated $350,000 with a loss due to the fire of $25,000.
In light of this incident and the impending cold season, Justin de Ruyter, Spokane Fire PIO urges residents to practice fire safety-particularly when using space heaters. He advises that space heaters should be kept at least three feet away from combustible materials, turned off when unattended, placed on a solid flat surface and plugged directly into wall outlets-avoiding using extension cords or power strips to mitigate fire hazards.
