Spokane Parks & Recreation’s Therapeutic Recreation Receives Donation

~ Spokane, Wash. - A generous donation of $203,000 has been made to Therapeutic Recreation Services (TRS), a program for people with disabilities under City of Spokane Parks & Recreation. The donation, given by the Leighton Family Trust, will greatly support and expand TRS scholarships and services for individuals in the community.

The Leighton family has a personal connection to TRS, as their son Jim was an active participant in the program. He particularly enjoyed weightlifting, skiing with the Powderhounds team, and attending social dances. Jim's parents, Jack and Helen Leighton, were strong advocates for the creation and growth of the Therapeutic Recreation Program in Spokane during the 1970s. As educators and mentors, they believed in the importance of recreation, inclusion, and dignity for all individuals.

Garrett Jones, director of City of Spokane Parks & Recreation expressed his gratitude for the Leighton family's donation. "This is truly incredible," he said. "We are grateful to the Leighton family for their years of volunteering and participation in our TRS programs. Their legacy will ensure that future generations can also benefit from these programs."

The funds from this donation will be used to support various aspects of TRS including scholarships for participants, adaptive equipment, Powderhounds team ski jackets, and new programs that cater to current interests and needs in Spokane.

Sara Bryant, TRS supervisor, shared her excitement about how this donation will positively impact individuals with disabilities in Spokane. "This tremendous gift will directly impact our ability to deliver TRS programs to people with disabilities," she said. "It will provide them with necessary equipment and resources to enjoy recreational activities that improve their quality of life."
