~ Spokane Fire Department Responds to Fatal House Fire on West 27th Avenue
In the early hours of the morning, firefighters were called to a residence on West 27th Avenue in response to reports of flames. According to Justin de Ruyter, Spokane Fire PIO, the call came in at 12:42 a.m. and multiple units were dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, Engine 9 from the Cannon Hill neighborhood found heavy fire coming from multiple windows on the first floor of the one-and-a-half-story house. The flames posed a threat to an adjacent residence located directly west of the home.
Firefighters quickly took action, securing a water supply and conducting an aggressive interior search. They also deployed several fire attack lines and created ventilation openings in the roof to combat the rapidly spreading fire. However, they encountered severe hoarding conditions, intense heat, heavy flames, and dense smoke throughout the structure.

Despite their efforts, it took nearly an hour for firefighters to control the main body of the fire due to its extensive nature and heavy fuel load within the home. Tragically, during their search, they discovered an adult female and two dogs who were pronounced deceased at the scene.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by both Special Investigations Unit and Spokane Police Department. It is expected that their investigation will continue today. While there is no formal damage estimate available yet, it is clear that both the home and its contents sustained significant damage.
SCRAPS (Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service) was also called to retrieve the deceased animals from the scene. Photos taken at the scene show extensive damage to both homes involved in this tragic incident.
Our thoughts go out to those affected by this devastating fire as authorities work towards determining its cause.
