~ Spokane City Officials Prepare for Winter Weather Response
As the winter season approaches, the City of Spokane is gearing up for potential snowfall with a comprehensive snow response plan. Kirstin Davis, Communications Manager for the city, announced today that the Street Department will begin their winter operations on November 15 and continue through March 15.
According to Clint Harris, the City's Street Director, maintaining safe transportation during the winter months requires a partnership between city operations and the community. He expressed appreciation for the efforts of residents, businesses, and partners in keeping areas clear during inclement weather.
The Street Department has implemented operational improvements and is fully staffed to handle snow response. They have also strategically placed satellite materials stations throughout the city to maintain 2,100 lane miles. This allows for flexibility in responding to changing conditions.
Residents are urged to take time now to prepare for winter weather. The city has outlined what residents can expect from their snow response plan:

- Weather conditions will be monitored 24/7.
- Priority areas for plowing include arterials, hills, hospitals, and school routes.
- Materials are readily available throughout the city for quick response.
- In case of heavy snowfall, a full-city plow will take approximately three days.
- Snow gates will be used in residential areas to reduce snow berms. However, arterial plowing does not use gates.
- Crews will work to keep sidewalks clear when possible.
The community can also play a role in helping with snow response efforts. The City has provided some tips on how residents can assist:
- Move recreational vehicles, boats, trailers, and basketball hoops off the street and into a designated winter storage location. It is important to note that according to Spokane Municipal Code (16A.61.562B), these items cannot exceed 24 hours of continuous on-street parking.
- Ensure you have adequate snow shovels or a working snow blower. Consider purchasing salt or sand for traction.
- Arrange for service with a snow removal company if you are unable to shovel yourself.
- Plan where to park during the snow season to make room for large equipment to clear the streets. Residents are asked to park on the odd-numbered side of the street during snow season to allow for maximum space for plows and first responders.

- On garbage collection days, make an effort to remove your carts from the street once they have been emptied.
- Know your residential snow-plow route to track the progress of plows during full-city plow operations.
- Communicate with your neighbors and offer assistance to those who may need help with shoveling or other winter tasks.
To stay informed about current snow response efforts, residents can utilize various communication resources provided by the city:
- The Snow Response Plan will be included in November's utility bill.
- The Street Department's website will provide updates on snow removal efforts.
- Follow @spokanecity on Facebook and Twitter for real-time updates.
- Check Spokane Transit Authority for bus route alerts and detour information.
- Review Spokane Public Schools' inclement weather procedures.
- Monitor Spokane Regional Transportation Management Center cameras.
- Refer to Avista's power outage map.
With a collaborative effort between city operations and community members, Spokane is prepared to handle winter weather and keep transportation running smoothly. Residents are encouraged to take necessary precautions and stay informed through available resources.
