The Environmental Protection Agency has selected the City of Spokane for $500,000 toward environmental investigation for private and public property in northeast Spokane. The grant dollars will be prioritized toward redevelopment and development sites and projects focused on housing and job creations.
"This is an exciting opportunity to explore the benefits of northeast Spokane and uncover the possibilities for economic and housing growth in one of our most historic neighborhoods," says Mayor Nadine Woodward.
Brownfields assessment and cleanup grants target communities with significant distress. These projects are located in Census tracts 2, 16, and 144 that are economically disadvantaged neighborhoods where environmental assessment, cleanup and new jobs are most needed for the 12,599 residents that have historically been left behind.

The City of Spokane's Brownfields Program works to minimize the risks associated with redeveloping a brownfield (possibly contaminated site). The program seeks out funding to conduct site assessments, conduct cleanup activities, along with providing technical assistance and information on statewide programs and policies. Spokane is one of three locations selected in the state of Washington.
