~ The U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded $12 million in grants to the City of Spokane and the Spokane Conservation District to improve the tree canopy in the area.
Garrett Jones, interim city administrator, said that this funding will allow trees to be planted and cared for in areas of greatest need, which is a priority in the Parks Master Plan and Sustainability Action Plan.
The funds will be divided between two projects: The Tree Equity Spokane project, which is part of SpoCanopy, a joint venture with City of Spokane Urban Forestry and The Lands Council; and the Spokane County Natural Resource Apprenticeship Program.
The Tree Equity Spokane project will increase tree canopy cover and provide urgent care for trees in disadvantaged communities in Spokane with the goal of achieving 30% canopy cover by 2030. The apprenticeship program will improve urban tree canopy and expand forestry career opportunities through hands-on urban and community forestry education programs.
The grants are part of a national $1 billion investment by the USDA to expand access to trees and green spaces.

Jones said that this funding is an incredible opportunity for future stewards of the land, as it provides learning opportunities such as summer education programs for local high school students with classroom-based environmental education and restoration fieldwork. This work aims to improve climate resiliency and public health in Spokane County while also creating new career pathways in under-resourced communities.
The Spokane Conservation District has been active since 1941, developing programs to facilitate sustainable land use and conservation practices while also planning resource use for the future. Recently they purchased a 50-acre site known as The Quarry located in the Spokane Valley which is being developed into a conservation campus for residents to explore and learn about their projects and programs.
City of Spokane Parks & Recreation stewards nearly 120 properties across 4,000 acres of park land including manicured parks, natural lands, aquatic centers, golf courses, sports complexes, and an arboretum while also offering hundreds of recreation opportunities for all ages and abilities to improve health quality of life for our community.
In conclusion, these grants from the U.S Department of Agriculture are providing an incredible opportunity for future stewards of the land while also improving climate resiliency, public health, tree canopy coverage as well as creating new career pathways in under-resourced communities throughout Spokane County.
