Delatorro Tribute Post Delatorro L. McNeal, Sr Dr. Delatorro L. McNeal, II Dr. Delatorro L. McNeal, II
Two generations of Black history makers share an important reminder that Black history isn't just about the past, it's about legacy lived in real time.

TAMPA, Fla. - Washingtoner -- A powerful image is currently going viral across social media. It features Hall of Fame keynote speaker, Dr. Delatorro L. McNeal II standing in solemn honor over a flag-draped casket holding his father who recently passed away.

In just 72 hours, the image generated more than 80,000 views. To date, it has surpassed over 220,000 views drawing over 1200 comments from people who have been inspired by the heartfelt tribute. Now, the emotional image posted to honor a father is sparking national conversation around service, fatherhood, healing and legacy.

Delatorro L. McNeal, Sr. was a decorated combat veteran, Purple Heart recipient who served in the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division. After sustaining life-altering spinal cord injuries in Vietnam, McNeal Sr. dedicated more than five decades to advocating for veterans. As one of few African Americans to serve as National Director of the Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA), he exercised his leadership to shape national policy that impacted the care, welfare and treatment of veterans nationally and internationally. He also helped pioneer the Spinal Cord Injury Wing at the VA Hospital in Tampa, the very wing where he later received care.

Honoring his life is his only biological son and namesake, Dr. Delatorro McNeal II. Ranked among the top 1% of paid speakers globally and one of only 12 African-American Hall of Fame speakers worldwide, Dr. McNeal had to make the life-altering decision to gradually step away from major portions of his global speaking schedule to serve as one of his father's primary caregivers - a decision that lasted 34 consecutive months, while his father fought complex health battles inside the VA system.

"I realized I couldn't be fully present on global stages and fully present for my father at the same time, so I chose presence," said Dr. McNeal, whose understanding of strength was reshaped by caregiving. "We talk about strength as dominance, but strength is devotion. Strength is sitting beside a hospital bed for 1,000 days when no one is watching."

Known for his viral teachings on Healing with Integrity, Dr. McNeal now honors his father in real time, not only by laying him to rest, but by living out his legacy.

"Because I didn't grow up living with my father, he and I had to work diligently to grow and heal our relationship and we became best friends as adults," added Dr. McNeal. "I have ZERO regrets because of three things. First, I honored my father while he was alive - speaking well of him in every keynote and interview I ever did. Second, I made the name he gave me, a global brand built on excellence & integrity so that his name lives on. Third, I became an incredible father myself to my own two daughters, and in my dad's final three years, I was present as one of his primary caregivers along with his wife of 44 years, Mrs Anna McNeal, and my older brother Michael McNeal."

As Black History Month comes to an end, this story with two generations of Black History makers shares an important reminder that Black history isn't just about the past, it's about legacy lived in real time.
