~ The Tacoma Arts Commission has announced their selection for the 2025-2027 Tacoma Poet Laureate, Mari Griffin. As the new Poet Laureate, Griffin will be responsible for promoting and uplifting the literary arts scene in Tacoma through various public events and engagements.
According to Heide Fernandez-Llamazares, Chair of the Tacoma Arts Commission, Griffin stood out among other candidates due to her strong and beautiful voice as well as her thoughtful and thorough ideas for the position. The commission is excited to see her vision come to life and make a positive impact on the community.
Griffin herself expressed her gratitude for being chosen as the Poet Laureate, stating that Tacoma is not just her home but also where she has grown as an artist, organizer, and cultural worker. She sees her role as a bridge between culture and care, using poetry to not only showcase talent but also support the emotional and social wellbeing of the community.

The official title will be awarded to Griffin at a free public poetry event called The Hot Seat. Co-hosted by All Bets on Us and Real Art Tacoma, the event will also feature outgoing Poet Laureate Christian Paige. It will take place on Sunday, August 17 at 1 p.m. at Real Art Tacoma on S Tacoma Way. Attendees can expect readings from both Paige and Griffin, performances, and a celebration of Tacoma's vibrant poetry community.
