This distinguished award is presented annually to individuals and organizations dedicated to enriching the visitor experience, making the Tri-Cities a vibrant destination to visit, work, and live, while supporting the initiatives of Visit Tri-Cities.
Since its founding in 1997 under Patel's leadership, A-1 Hospitality Group has played a pivotal role in fostering community growth and advancing the local tourism industry through strategic development, investments, and collaborations. "Being named a Tourism Champion is both an honor and a responsibility," said Vijay Patel, President, A-1 Hospitality Group. Vijay Patel's career in hospitality began when he joined ASDA Supermarket, a leading UK supermarket chain. In 1994, he relocated permanently to the United States with his family, managing a family-owned motel in Klamath Falls for three years before founding his own business. In 1997, Patel acquired and renovated the Travelodge (formerly the Longhorn Motel), marking the start of his entrepreneurial journey in hospitality. Over the years, he expanded his hotel portfolio to include several renowned brands with IHG, Marriott, and Hilton.

Beyond guiding the company, Patel has dedicated much time giving back to the industry and community by participating in various organizations and taking on leadership roles. He is a member of the Oregon Lodging & Restaurant Association and has been nominated for a position on the Board of Directors, representing Umatilla and Morrow Counties. Additionally, he is involved with the American Hotel and Lodging Association as well as the Asian American Hotel Owners Association.
Throughout his career, Patel has held numerous leadership positions, including Vice President (2003-2004) and Chairman (2004-2005) of the Oregon Lodging Association. He received the American Hotel and Lodging Association's Most Valuable Volunteer (MVP) Award in 2003. He has served on the Tri-Cities Hotel-Motel Commission, and the Eastern Oregon Trade & Event Center Advisory Board. Most recently, he was elected to serve on the IHG Owners Association's Global Board of Directors and chairs the America's Regional Committee.
