~ The City Council of Tacoma has taken a significant step towards expanding its global engagement by officially designating Kochi, India as a Friendship City. This resolution, known as Resolution 41815, was sponsored by Mayor Victoria Woodards and District 4 Council Member Sandesh Sadalge. The decision was made in recognition of the growing relationship between the two diverse coastal communities and sets the stage for potential future Sister City status.
Mayor Woodards expressed her excitement about this new partnership, stating that it will create new opportunities for cultural, educational, and economic exchange. She also thanked the Tacoma-Kochi Friendship City Committee for their efforts so far, including hosting a successful Festival of Light for India Day last October.
The Festival of Light was a public event that engaged the community through cultural activities, a fashion show, and educational workshops. It was during this event that a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed in November 2024 during a delegation visit to Kochi. This MOU laid a strong foundation for future partnerships between the two cities.

Council Member Sadalge also shared his enthusiasm for this designation, stating that it is deeply meaningful to him as the first South Asian born Council Member in Tacoma. He has been actively involved in working with the Tacoma-Kochi Friendship City Committee and participating in events that showcase the arts, cultures, and heritage of India. He believes that Sister City relationships are crucial in making Tacoma a welcoming and inclusive city.
The partnership between Tacoma and Kochi is based on their shared strengths and complementary priorities. Both cities are diverse coastal communities with robust port operations, growing creative economies, and strong commitments to sustainability and community-driven development.
Some key areas identified for mutual collaboration include maritime industries and port operations, sustainability initiatives such as climate resilience and clean energy, as well as cultural and educational opportunities for local schools, universities, and arts groups.
It is important to note that this Friendship City designation is a stepping stone and will be reviewed within five years to determine if it should evolve into a formal Sister City status. The City Council believes that this partnership has the potential to bring significant benefits to both cities and looks forward to further strengthening their relationship.
