Tacoma: Apply by November 9 to Serve on the Charter Review Committee

~ The City of Tacoma is now accepting applications for the Charter Review Committee, which will review the City Charter in 2024. The deadline to apply is November 9, 2023 at 5 PM.

Mayor and members of the City Council will each recommend one individual for appointment, while the Government Performance and Finance Committee will recommend a diverse group of 10 or more individuals for Council appointment. Interviews are tentatively scheduled for December 5, 2023 from 8:30 to 11:30 AM.

The Charter Review Committee is expected to meet between January and April 2024 in a hybrid format with virtual and in-person options to attend. The committee should represent a diverse group of residents representing different perspectives and socio-economic backgrounds including, by way of example, a youth representative. The committee is expected to submit its final report and recommendations to the City Council by May 7, 2024.

Each appointed applicant is required to complete Open Public Meetings Act and Public Records Act trainings within 90 days of being appointed. The application is available at cityoftacoma.org/CharterReview or can be requested from the City Clerk's Office at cityclerk@cityoftacoma.org or (253) 591-5505.

To request a copy of the Charter or get additional information about the Charter Review process contact the City Clerk's Office at cityclerk@cityoftacoma.org or (253) 591-5505. Applications must be received in the City Clerk's Office by 5 PM on November 9, 2023.

Residents of Tacoma have an opportunity to serve on an important committee that will review their governing document -the City Charter - in 2024 as applications are now being accepted until November 9th at 5 PM for those interested in volunteering on a 15-member Charter Review Committee .

The Mayor and members of the City Council will each recommend one individual for appointment while six positions will be recommended by Government Performance and Finance Committee from a diverse group of 10 or more individuals who will then be appointed by Council after interviews tentatively scheduled for December 5th from 8:30 to 11:30 AM .

The work involved with this committee is expected to be time intensive as it involves thorough review of existing charter with possible after hours meetings as well as extensive community engagement . The committee is expected to meet between January and April 2024 in hybrid format with virtual as well as in person options available . Final report along with recommendations must be submitted by May 7th , 2024 .
