SAN ANTONIO, May 5, 2025 ~ Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) has been recognized for its groundbreaking work in energy storage research. The prestigious 2025 BCI Innovation Award, presented by Battery Council International (BCI), was awarded to PNNL for its establishment and launch of the Grid Storage Launchpad (GSL).
The GSL, located on PNNL's Richland, Wash., campus, is a $75 million research facility funded by the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Electricity. Its focus is on developing batteries and energy storage technologies that are crucial to supporting the U.S. economy and providing affordable and reliable electricity.
Roger Miksad, Executive Vice President of BCI, emphasized the importance of partnerships between the private sector and national labs in advancing technology and developing new energy storage solutions. He praised PNNL for its spirit of collaboration and partnership represented by the GSL.

Vince Sprenkle, Director of the Grid Storage Launchpad at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, expressed gratitude for receiving this prestigious award. He also highlighted PNNL's commitment to continued partnership with BCI in meeting the nation's energy storage needs.
In addition to PNNL's recognition, Daramic received Honorable Mention for their work on separators for low overcharge conditions in deep cycle applications.
The BCI Innovation Award is presented annually to celebrate innovation in equipment, processes, services, and products that advance the lead battery industry. It was established in honor of Sally Breidegam Miksiewicz, former CEO of East Penn Manufacturing Co., who was a thought leader in the industry.
