~ Spokane City Offers Multiple Options for Christmas Tree Disposal
As the holiday season comes to an end and the gifts have been opened, it's time to start thinking about cleaning up. The City of Spokane is ready to help residents with their post-holiday cleanup, offering several options for recycling Christmas trees and disposing of other holiday waste.
According to Kirstin Davis, Communications Manager for the City of Spokane, residents can take advantage of free curbside pickup for fresh-cut Christmas trees. This service will be available from Monday, January 5th through Friday, January 16th. Customers can simply place their tree on the curb on their regular collection day and the City will take care of the rest.
However, there are a few guidelines that residents must follow in order for their tree to be collected. All decorations and lights must be removed from the tree as they will be chipped and composted. Additionally, trunks should not exceed three inches in diameter and if the tree is taller than six feet, it should be cut in half. Loose branches can also be bundled next to the tree as long as they do not exceed six feet in length.

Residents are reminded to place their trees at least three feet away from their garbage and recycling carts on their regularly scheduled pickup days. It's important to note that only fresh-cut trees will be accepted through this service; artificial or flocked trees will not be collected.

In addition to curbside pickup, City and County residents also have the option to take their undecorated and unflocked trees for disposal at various facilities including Waste to Energy Facility on S. Geiger Blvd., Spokane Valley Transfer Station on N. Sullivan Road, and North County Transfer Station on Elk-Chattaroy Road.
However, residents should be aware that trees taller than six feet must be cut in half and there is a minimum charge for clean green disposal at these facilities. The trees will be composted. For more information, residents can call the Recycling Hotline at 509.477.6800. It's important to note that these facilities will be closed on Thursday, January 1st.

For those looking to dispose of their trees while also supporting a good cause, there may be opportunities to do so through local Scouts, school groups, or other charitable organizations.
In addition to Christmas tree disposal, the City of Spokane also has tips for disposing of other holiday waste such as paper, bows, ribbons, and boxes. Residents are reminded that gift wrap (excluding metallic foil paper and cellophane), cardboard boxes, and wrapping paper rolls can all be recycled in their blue recycling carts. However, items such as Styrofoam, plastic bags, plastic wrap, gift bags, and tissue paper should go in the garbage cart.
Lastly, residents are reminded that garbage and recycling collection will be delayed by one day following the New Year's Day holiday. Those with regular Friday services will have their pickup on Saturday instead. The Waste to Energy facility and transfer stations will also be closed on Thursday, January 1st.
With these options available for Christmas tree disposal and waste management during the holiday season, residents can easily clean up after the festivities while also being environmentally conscious.
