~ On the evening of January 23, 2026, a tense situation unfolded at a residence on North Hemlock Street in Spokane. A call was made to 911 by a distressed female, reporting that a male inside the home was armed and making threats. The male was later identified as Clayton Green.

According to Officer Daniel Strassenberg, Public Information Officer for the Spokane Police Department, the call came in just before 6:30 p.m. and officers were immediately dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, they encountered two females who had left the home and were able to provide information about the situation.

Based on interviews with the victims and witnesses, officers determined that there was probable cause for Felony Harassment- Domestic Violence. However, due to Green's comments about being armed and ready for law enforcement, multiple specialty units were called in for assistance.

The SPD SWAT team, K9 unit, Hostage Negotiators (HNT), and Air Support Unit (ASU) all responded to the scene. HNT attempted to make contact with Green by phone multiple times over the course of an hour. Despite their efforts to peacefully resolve the situation, Green refused to surrender and made concerning statements about shooting himself or law enforcement if they entered the home.

At one point during negotiations, Green emerged onto the front porch armed with a handgun and placed it against his head while yelling. He then retreated back into the house without complying with officer's commands.

After obtaining a search warrant, officers continued their attempts to have Green surrender peacefully. However, at around 10:30 p.m., he threw a lit object out of the front door towards SWAT officers. The object turned out to be a large firework that exploded in the front yard.

In response to this dangerous act, chemical irritants were deployed into the residence while HNT continued negotiations with Green over the phone. Finally, at 11:23 p.m., Green emerged from the home and was taken into custody without further incident.

He was identified as Clayton J. Green, 43 years old, and was arrested for Felony Harassment- Domestic Violence, 1st Degree Arson, and 2nd Degree Assault. He was booked into the Spokane County Jail.

Officer Strassenberg commended the officers on scene for their incredible restraint and professionalism in handling this volatile situation. He stated that their actions were a testament to their training and character. The SPD is grateful that this incident ended without any injuries or loss of life.
