Spokane: SPD Makes Arrest in Shooting that Critically Wounded a Man

~ On Friday, October 20th, Spokane Police officers responded to a call of a shooting outside of a food and beverage establishment located in the 2400 block of East Sprague Ave. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found a male victim suffering from critical gunshot wounds. The victim was treated on site by medics and transported to an area hospital.

Major Crimes detectives were called to the scene and began an investigation. After several days of investigation, they identified a suspect and developed probable cause for his arrest. On Monday, October 23rd, detectives issued a warrant for the suspect's arrest and he was apprehended the following day in Lewiston Idaho.

The suspect, Dumont Whitt (47), was booked into the Nez Perce County Detention Center for 1st Degree Assault and two new Idaho charges: unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a stolen firearm. Whitt is a 3 time convicted felon with convictions including 2nd Degree Manslaughter, 2nd Degree Assault, and 1st Degree Unlawful Possession of a Firearm as well as 5 prior gross misdemeanor convictions such as 4th Degree Assault and 2nd Degree Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.

Whitt remains in the Nez Perce County Detention Center awaiting extradition to Spokane. Julie Humphreys, Public Safety Communication Manager commented on the incident saying "We are pleased that our detectives were able to quickly identify this suspect and take him into custody without further incident".
