~ At 9:20 a.m. today, the Spokane Fire Department responded to a call regarding a bedroom fire at the Larchmont Apartments, located at 1428 West 10th Ave. Emergency operators relayed information that the occupant of Apartment #10 had detected a fire in her bedroom and swiftly evacuated the building with her phone and dog. Other residents reported black smoke in hallways visible from the exterior and noted that additional occupants were also evacuating.
Battalion Chief 1 was the first on the scene within four minutes, reporting visible smoke on the exterior from the third floor. Engine 4 and Ladder 4 were tasked with ensuring evacuation of all occupants on the third floor and extinguishing the fire. As more firefighters arrived, they secured a water supply to a nearby fire hydrant, deployed additional hose lines, and ensured complete evacuation of the building. The fire was promptly extinguished, resulting in significant damage to Apartment #10 and moderate smoke and water damage to other units and hallways.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, with damage estimates not yet available. However, officials are assessing habitability of all units, with at least one unit currently deemed uninhabitable. Fortunately, no injuries to public or firefighters were reported as smoke alarms activated appropriately.
Tour Commander from Spokane Fire Department emphasized importance of closing doors when evacuating during a fire - not only door to fire room but also door to public hallway, stairways, and exit doors - as it helps contain fire to adjacent rooms by limiting oxygen supply while reducing smoke and heat along evacuation routes for successful evacuation without assistance or rescue from firefighters.
