~ Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown has taken action to honor victims of political violence by ordering flags at all City facilities to be lowered to half-staff. This decision comes in response to Governor Bob Ferguson's directive for state and U.S. flags at all state agency facilities to also be lowered immediately.

The flags will remain at half-staff until sunset on Sunday, September 14th. This is in memory of all victims of political violence, including Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, who were tragically assassinated on June 14th, 2025. The city also mourns the loss of Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated on September 10th, 2025.

In addition to honoring those who lost their lives, the lowered flags also serve as a tribute to Minnesota Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette, who were seriously injured in an attempted assassination.

Spokane's Communications Director Erin Hut stated that "violence has no place in our democracy" and expressed the city's deepest sympathies to those impacted by these senseless acts. She also encouraged residents with flags outside their homes or businesses to join in honoring the victims of political violence.

The mayor's order for lowered flags aligns with the governor's directive and serves as a reminder that these acts of violence have no place in our society. The city stands united with the nation in mourning those who have lost their lives.
