Firefighters checked the attic and nearby units and found the fire had not spread beyond the room where it began, the department said.

Investigators from the Spokane Fire Department and Spokane Police Department determined the fire was electrical in nature and started at an outlet near the mattress. They found no suspicious circumstances. Spokane County Fire District 4's accelerant-detection canine team assisted in checking the scene for ignitable liquid residues.
Investigators also found that the room's smoke alarm had been disabled before the fire. The department said the lack of a working alarm likely contributed to the death.
The department said working smoke alarms can provide early warning and allow occupants to evacuate and call firefighters.
