~ Officials from the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the American Beverage Foundation visited Spokane on Tuesday to see how a $200,000 grant is supporting the city's Youth Wellness Zone, a student-led initiative focused on youth mental health and well-being.
The City of Spokane received the grant in January 2026 through the organizations' "Healthy and Sustainable Communities" program. The funding has helped expand the initiative's staffing and student participation, strengthen partnerships with local businesses and community organizations, and support the launch of student-led projects, according to the city.
The Youth Wellness Zone began during the 2024-25 school year with an elective wellness class at On Track Academy. Students identify and prioritize youth wellness needs, propose solutions and work with community partners to develop strategies for putting them into practice.

During their visit, officials met with students and staff and toured the wellness classroom and Schoolyard Forest.
"This investment will help Spokane's young people turn their ideas into meaningful projects that strengthen their schools, neighborhoods and environment," said Kevin Keane, president and CEO of American Beverage and president of the American Beverage Foundation for a Healthy America's board.
Mayor Lisa Brown said the support is helping expand opportunities and wellness services for young people. Tom Cochran, CEO and executive director of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, said the partnership has invested in programs intended to strengthen communities and improve outcomes for children and families.
Jene Ray, executive director of the Northeast Community Center and The ZONE, said the grant has amplified the initiative's goals and engaged students in civic participation. On Track Academy Principal Chris Burke said the funding would allow the school to provide more opportunities for students.
