~ Spokane City Council Approves Reforestation Pilot Program in Downtown Spokane
During Monday's Legislative Session, the Spokane City Council unanimously passed Resolution 2025-0058, which will launch a one-year reforestation pilot program in partnership with the Downtown Spokane Partnership (DSP). The goal of this program is to enhance the tree canopy in downtown Spokane.
Council Member Jonathan Bingle, who sponsored the resolution, expressed his excitement about its passage. He stated, "This plan addresses the concerns of residents and business owners and uses federal grant funds to make downtown a more inviting and attractive place."
The one-year pilot program will focus on several key elements. Firstly, it aims to strengthen collaboration between the city and DSP by developing outreach and engagement materials for property owners, tenants, and residents related to downtown reforestation. Additionally, there will be an increase in human resources and professional development to support proactive tree stewardship with DSP.

The program also offers free technical services and support from Urban Foresters to overcome barriers to street tree planting and ensure compliance with city codes and standards. Furthermore, a central contact point will be established to assist property owners in navigating the various city agencies involved in permitting, service, and maintenance of public infrastructure in the commercial district.
The Parks & Recreation Urban Forestry staff will oversee and manage the pilot program. The costs associated with this initiative will be funded through the Tree Equity Spokane grant provided by the USDA Forest Service.
This reforestation pilot program is a significant step towards creating a greener and more sustainable downtown Spokane. With collaboration between the city and DSP, it is expected that this initiative will have a positive impact on both residents and businesses in the area.
