~ Spokane Police responded to a report of an assault on the night of August 15th, 2024 at 800 W Garland. Upon arrival, officers found a male victim lying on the ground, surrounded by concerned community members. The victim was unconscious and struggling to breathe, with a severe head injury. He was immediately transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Further investigation revealed that the victim had been escorted out of a nearby business before the assault occurred. The suspect was not present when officers arrived, but detectives from SPD's Major Crimes Unit (MCU) were able to identify him. The Violent Crimes Task Force (VCTF) then launched a search for the suspect.

Yesterday, VCTF located and apprehended the suspect, identified as Johnnie W. Witherspoon (48). Witherspoon has an extensive criminal history with prior felony convictions for 1st Degree Burglary and Possession of a Controlled Substance. He was arrested and booked into Spokane County Jail for 1st Degree Assault.
The victim's condition is currently unknown and the investigation is ongoing. Officer Daniel Strassenberg from the Public Information Office urges anyone with information about this incident to come forward and assist in bringing justice for the victim.
