Brian Walker, Communications Manager, 509 ~ Spokane is gearing up for a series of volunteer clean-up days in September and October, with activities consisting of graffiti abatement and litter pickup.
The first event is the 20th annual Spokane River Cleanup, which will take place on Saturday, September 16th from 8am to 2pm. This self-guided event is organized by The Lands Council and the City of Spokane, and bags can be picked up from Wednesday, September 13th through Friday, September 15th from noon to 3pm or 4:30 to 6pm in the Saranac Lobby at 25 W. Main St. Volunteers are asked to have their trash at designated places marked by cones by 2pm as that is when the City will pick it up. The following three events are organized by the City's Office of Neighborhood Services (ONS). On Friday, September 22nd there will be a graffiti cover-up and litter pick-up in the Audubon-Downriver neighborhood from 10am to 1pm; volunteers should meet at the Audubon Park play area at 3405 N. Milton St. for an orientation and supplies. On Friday, October 6th there will be a similar event in the East Central neighborhood; volunteers should meet at Liberty Park Library at 402 S. Pittsburg St., also at 10am for an orientation and supplies. Finally on Friday, October 13th there will be a graffiti cover-up and litter pick-up in the Riverside neighborhood; volunteers should meet at Grocery Outlet parking lot at 1617 E Third Ave., also at 10am.

ONS Director Patrick Striker encourages individuals, business teams and civic groups to volunteer for these activities this fall as "an excellent way to help spruce up our community". Volunteers should wear comfortable clothing and bring water; questions about these events can be emailed to ONS Community Engagement Programs Manager Pollyanne Birge at pbirge@spokanecity.org
