~ The City of Spokane has taken a significant step towards addressing climate change by launching a community climate policy survey. This survey, part of the next phase of the City's Climate Planning efforts, aims to gather feedback from residents on future goals and policies that will guide local action to mitigate, adapt to, and address climate hazards.
According to Kirstin Davis, Communications Manager for the City of Spokane, this survey is an opportunity for community members to have their voices heard and help shape the city's approach to building a resilient future. The survey will be open until Sunday, August 31st, 2025 and is available in multiple languages including English, Spanish, Russian, Vietnamese, Arabic, and Marshallese.
The results from this survey will play a crucial role in influencing policies that will be integrated into the PlanSpokane 2046 Periodic Update to the Comprehensive Plan. This update will guide future actions and decisions made by City staff and leaders. Mayor Lisa Brown emphasized the importance of community involvement in this process stating, "We are seeking community feedback because climate change affects us all. We want to hear from people in every one of Spokane's 29 neighborhoods and understand your priorities as we plan for a more resilient future."

This survey comes after an earlier call for community input on their experiences and opinions regarding climate challenges such as wildfires and extreme heat. Over 1,500 residents shared their stories which contributed to the creation of the City of Spokane Climate Risk and Vulnerability Assessment. This technical report combined diverse perspectives and lived experiences with extensive data to identify local climate risks and vulnerabilities.
Funding for the City of Spokane Climate Planning project comes from a state grant provided by the Washington Department of Commerce through Washington's Climate Commitment Act (CCA). The CCA supports Washington's efforts towards addressing climate change by utilizing cap-and-invest dollars to reduce pollution, create jobs, and improve public health.
Residents are encouraged to participate in the survey and have their say in shaping the future of Spokane's climate policies. More information about the CCA can be found on their website.
