~ The City Council of Tacoma will be holding a public hearing on August 12, 2025 to discuss proposed changes to the South Tacoma Groundwater Protection District (STGPD) code and Tacoma Municipal Code (TMC) Title 13. The hearing will take place during the Council meeting, starting no earlier than 5:15 p.m. and will be conducted in a hybrid format, allowing both in-person and virtual attendance.
The STGPD was established as a zoning overlay with the purpose of safeguarding the South Tacoma aquifer, which serves as a crucial source of drinking water. The district regulates activities such as high-impact uses, hazardous materials, and stormwater infiltration within its boundaries. In accordance with the State Growth Management Act and under the guidance of the Council, the City is currently reviewing proposed updates to the code governing this district. These updates aim to enhance protections for the South Tacoma aquifer.
