Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 8, 1941, America formally declared war on Japan, and Germany, committed by treaty to Japan, declared war on the United States three days later. The European struggle had now become a worldwide one, and it wasn't long before the first elements of the United States' Eighth Air Force were firmly placed in England. From their first official mission in August 1942, the American Eighth Air Force relentlessly pounded the enemy by day, while the RAF Bomber Command attacked at night in a campaign critical to the Allied triumph in Europe.

The Eighth Air Force assaulted the Skoda factory in Pilsen, Czechoslovakia, on April 25, 1945, the last of 968 combat operations with over 523,000 sorties for the war's greatest air force. The Eighth Air Force dropped 700,000 tons of bombs throughout the course of its three-year bombing campaign, wreaking havoc on a scale that Nazi Germany would never recover from.
To commemorate the courage and sacrifice made by the thousands of pilots who served in the 'Mighty Eighth,' artist Anthony Saunders has painted a lovely picture worthy of the occasion, almost 80 years after the first components of the United States Eighth Air Force arrived in England. Anthony has chosen the historic B-17s from the 381st Bomb Group to represent those who flew and battled with the Eighth Air Force in his exhibition titled 'Return to Ridgewell.' On 11 July 1944, they are seen returning from a long and grueling mission to Munich, performing a final gentle turn low over the tranquil banks of the River Stour, and preparing to land at Ridgewell, their home base nearby. 'Rotherhithe's R' is in the forefront.
