~ Tacoma City Council Member Joe Bushnell has been appointed to lead the National League of Cities' Military Communities Council for a one-year term, according to a press release from the city's media and communications department.
As Chair of the council, Bushnell will be responsible for leading a diverse coalition of local government leaders in driving collaboration, networking, and the development of resources and programs for military communities across the nation. This appointment comes as no surprise, as Bushnell is a Marine Corps veteran himself and has a deep understanding of the needs and experiences of veterans and active duty families.
"I am honored to have been chosen for this role and to have the opportunity to elevate the voices and needs of our military community at a national level," said Council Member Bushnell. "Tacoma is home to a large population of veterans and active duty families, and as a city just 10 minutes from Joint Base Lewis-McChord, we are well aware of their unique needs. I look forward to working with local governments across the country to address these needs collaboratively."

The National League of Cities President Steve Patterson, who is also the Mayor of Athens, Ohio, expressed his excitement about Bushnell's appointment. "Member Councils play an integral role in shaping NLC's policies by bringing together local leaders from similar communities to share ideas, experiences, and challenges," he said. "I am confident that Council Member Bushnell will lead NLC's Military Communities Council with dedication and passion as we work towards building resilient cities for the future."
Joining Bushnell on this year's council leadership team is Vice Chair Riakos Adams, Council Member from Killeen, Texas. Together, they will work towards ensuring that cities, towns, and villages are prepared for any challenges that may arise in their military communities.
