The Spokane Police Department is urging community members to be vigilant against a new fraud and scam that has been spreading across the country. Officer Daniel Strassenberg, from the Public Information Office, has issued a statement to raise awareness about home title/deed theft.
This type of crime involves criminals targeting a home and using stolen identities to create and falsify documents in order to transfer the home title to another person for financial gain. The perpetrators often use forged documents, including fake identification, to initiate a real estate transaction. Once this is done, they can file paperwork with the county register of deeds to transfer ownership of the home to themselves or a third party. This allows them to borrow against the value of the home or sell it outright.

Unfortunately, many homeowners are not aware of this type of fraud until it is too late and they have lost ownership of their property. In order to prevent falling victim to this scam, community members are advised to be on the lookout for any suspicious activity. Any filings or liens that were not initiated by the homeowner should be reported immediately.
