~ Spokane, WA- On Monday, July 8, drivers can expect major road closures on north Monroe St. as part of the ongoing grind and overlay project. According to Kirstin Davis, Communications Manager for the city, the paving work will require a complete closure of all northbound and southbound lanes between Kiernan Ave. and Francis Ave.
In addition to the lane closures, the intersection of west Garland Ave. and north Monroe St. will also be closed for the day. Drivers are advised to use alternate routes such as Maple/Ash streets, Division St., and Wall/Post streets.

The closure is expected to last for one day, with North Monroe St. reopening by Tuesday, July 9. This project is part of the city's Six Year Comprehensive Streets plan which aims to maintain 2,200 lane miles of streets. The project also includes signal work and ADA-compliant sidewalk improvements.
The grind and overlay method was chosen for this project due to its efficiency in extending the lifespan of existing roadways while maintaining safety and aesthetics. As a journalist reporting on this project, it is important to inform the public about these closures and encourage them to use designated detour routes for their convenience and safety.
