Spokane: Final Construction Phase of Downtown Corridor Begins May 19th

~ Washington and Stevens Streets in downtown Spokane will experience lane reductions and traffic delays starting Monday, May 19th as the final phase of a two-year project comes to a close. The grind and overlay work, which will take place between Spokane Falls Boulevard and 3rd Avenue, is expected to continue through July.

According to Kirstin Davis, Communications Manager for the city, motorists are advised to plan ahead, allow for extra time, and watch for detours. She also urges drivers to slow down for everyone's safety and make an extra effort to support businesses that may be impacted by the necessary construction.

The project will begin with southbound Stevens Street between Sprague Avenue and 1st Avenue, as well as northbound Washington Street between Main Street and 1st Avenue. Lane reductions will be in place on both streets throughout the duration of the project, resulting in slower speeds and potential traffic delays.

Despite these disruptions, businesses along the corridor will remain accessible. The city is encouraging residents to make an extra effort to support these establishments during this time.

In addition to the Washington and Stevens grind and overlay work, another project will also impact traffic in the East Central neighborhood. Hartson Avenue will be closed between Freya Street and Havana Street from Monday morning until Friday, May 23rd. This closure is part of a Safe Routes to Schools pedestrian improvement project near Frances Scott Elementary.

Drivers can expect to be detoured onto 2nd or 3rd Avenues while Freya Street and Havana Street will remain open for northbound and southbound traffic. Local residential access on Hartson Avenue will still be maintained during this time.
