SPOKANE, WA, June 18, 2025 ~ Spokane Fire Department Responds to Suspicious Brush Fire in Latah Valley
On June 18, 2025, a suspicious brush fire broke out in the Latah Valley area of Spokane, Washington. The fire was first reported at approximately 3:45 p.m. by Battalion 1, who was providing mutual aid for a wildfire in the nearby 6300 block of South Cheney Spokane Road.
Upon noticing a prominent smoke column rising to the south, Battalion 1 quickly requested a wildland response to investigate the source. Within ten minutes, crews arrived at the scene on West Thorpe Road and discovered a grass and brush fire burning under an acre in size within a timbered area.
The Spokane Fire Department immediately sprang into action, supported by resources from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources and Spokane County Fire District 10. Thanks to their coordinated efforts, the fire was contained and firefighters began mopping up hot spots just over an hour after their arrival.

According to Justin de Ruyter, Spokane Fire PIO, the cause of the fire is currently under investigation and is considered suspicious. Investigators are seeking information regarding a dark-colored Ford Ranger with noticeable items in its bed that was seen leaving the area shortly after the fire was reported.
