The cause of the fire was determined to be an accident when a homeowner knocked over a tub of solvent onto an operating space heater. Fortunately, there were no injuries to civilians or SFD personnel.
Justin de Ruyter, Spokane Fire PIO, commented that this incident is a reminder of the potential dangers of flammable materials and highlights the critical role of fire safety in residential areas. He offered several tips for reducing fire risk in garages where flammable liquids are used or stored: safe use; electrical safety; keeping a fire extinguisher readily accessible; proper disposal of rags; and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
