~ Tacoma, WA- On Wednesday, July 29, 2026, the District 5 community members are invited to attend a Participatory Budgeting Idea Collection Kick-Off at Wapato Park from 6 – 7 p.m. This event aims to gather input from the community on a $1.6 million capital project that addresses decarbonization and/or climate resiliency in an environmentally "overburdened" area. The general public is also welcome to join in the celebration alongside the District 5 community members.

Earlier this year, the City of Tacoma was awarded $650,000 by the Washington State Department of Commerce for this project. Mayor Anders Ibsen and Deputy Mayor and District 5 Council Member Joe Bushnell will be present at the event along with staff from the City of Tacoma, Parks Tacoma, and the Washington State Department of Commerce. They will be available to answer questions and collect ideas from community members on how they would like to see this project come to life.

The Participatory Budgeting process allows community members to have a say in how a portion of the public budget is spent. Anyone who lives, works, learns or plays in District 5 can submit a project proposal during the idea collection phase which ends on September 30, 2026. Ideas can be submitted through Engage Pierce County or at various events and locations throughout the district that will be announced on the Participatory Budget web page.

The proposals will then be voted on by the community and implemented by the City of Tacoma with its funding partners. The voting period will be open from January 1 through March 17, 2027.

This initiative is made possible by funding from Washington's Climate Commitment Act (CCA), which supports efforts towards reducing climate pollution, creating jobs and improving public health. More information about CCA can be found at climate.wa.gov.

For those with questions about the event or requests for information in an alternate format, they can contact Liesl Santkuyl at lsantkuyl@tacoma.gov. Interested individuals can also visit the Participatory Budgeting page to learn more about the process.

The Participatory Budgeting Idea Collection Kick-Off will take place at Wapato Park's Main Picnic Shelter located at 6500 South Sheridan Avenue in Tacoma, WA. The event will begin at 6 p.m. and end at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, 2026. All community members are encouraged to attend and share their ideas for a better and more sustainable District 5.
