~ Spokane City Council Takes Action to Address Aggressive Speeding and Street Racing
During Monday's Legislative Session, the Spokane City Council unanimously passed an ordinance aimed at enhancing public safety by addressing concerns about aggressive speeding and street racing. The ordinance, co-sponsored by Council Members Paul Dillon and Michael Cathcart, strengthens enforcement measures and provides crucial deterrents to dangerous driving that puts the community at risk.
Lisa Gardner, the City Council Communications Director, stated that this proactive step demonstrates Spokane's commitment to safer streets and reducing aggressive driving. She also mentioned that the council has received numerous complaints about excessive speeds in downtown areas and neighborhoods. This behavior poses a danger throughout the city, making it necessary for the council to take meaningful action.
Council Member Paul Dillon expressed his pride in working with the City Attorney to adopt new tools that will help the Spokane Police Department (SPD) respond to these incidents. He emphasized that street races have posed a clear and present danger to the neighborhoods where they are held.

The ordinance includes clearly defined terms and penalties for various forms of dangerous driving, such as aggressive speeding, exhibition of speed, street racing, unlawful racing events, and unauthorized vehicle use. By establishing these definitions, the City aims to create a safer environment for all residents and motorists.
Council Member Michael Cathcart highlighted the risks associated with street racing and expressed his satisfaction with the passage of this ordinance. He believes that it will give law enforcement clear and modern tools to respond to dangerous behavior, deter future incidents, and keep Spokane's streets safe for everyone.
In addition to defining offenses and penalties, the ordinance also outlines the types of video evidence that SPD may consider when addressing violations under this section. This ensures a fair and thorough enforcement process.
The Spokane City Council's unanimous vote on this ordinance reflects their dedication to promoting public safety in their community. With these new measures in place, they hope to see a decrease in aggressive speeding and street racing incidents, making the streets safer for all.
