~ Spokane Falls Blvd. in downtown Spokane has been identified as a top priority for reconstruction in the City's Comprehensive Plan. The bustling street, known for its scenic views and iconic landmarks, is set to undergo major upgrades in the coming years.
Originally named Front Avenue, Spokane Falls Blvd. was once a wide dirt road lined with various businesses and the railroad depot. Today, it remains a high-traffic area, with thousands of people passing through each day to visit popular destinations such as the Spokane Convention Center and Riverfront Park.
To gather input from the community on the future of Spokane Falls Blvd., the City has launched a planning study and is inviting residents to participate in a short survey. According to Marlene Feist, Public Works Director, community engagement is crucial in determining the priorities for this project.
The survey, which is now open and will close in mid-September, covers various elements of Spokane Falls Blvd. from Division St. to Lincoln St. These include potential traffic enhancements such as lane reductions or converting the street from one-way to two-way between Washington St. and Division St., with the aim of improving traffic flow and accessibility within downtown.

Other key elements under consideration include upgrades to pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure, such as expanded sidewalks, additional bike lanes, and improved crossings. These improvements align with the City's Master Bike Plan and aim to create safer and more accessible pathways for non-motorized transportation.
The planning study also includes exploring alternative parking configurations that cater to both residential and commercial needs while making efficient use of urban space. Additionally, critical upgrades to underground utilities are planned as part of this project, including water, sewer, electric, natural gas, and communication systems.
Stormwater management solutions will also be implemented within or adjacent to the City's right-of-way to mitigate flooding risks and promote environmental sustainability.
The planning study is expected to be completed by the end of 2024, with detailed design work extending through 2025 and 2026. Construction is tentatively scheduled for 2026 to 2028, pending funding availability. During the final design phase, construction sequencing and phasing details will be refined.
The City is committed to ensuring that Spokane Falls Blvd. remains a vibrant and accessible area for residents and visitors alike. With the community's input, this project aims to enhance the street's functionality while preserving its historic charm.
